How to Draw Mulan

Now it’s time to draw one of Walt Disney’s most iconic heroines. Follow the step-by-step instructions below to learn how to draw Mulan.

This is a brave, hardworking, disciplined and smart girl. Mulan has thick black hair and brown eyes. The girl usually wears a long dress. In this picture, Mulan is holding a sword.

Step 1: Sketch Mulan’s body construction

Draw an oval for Mulan’s head, then extend a straight centerline downward. Add light curved lines to mark the upper torso, waist, and lower edge of the long dress.

Step 2: Add Mulan’s arm guides

Extend thin lines from the upper torso to mark the position of both arms. Add small circles at the elbows and larger shapes at the ends to indicate the hands holding the sword.

Step 3: Outline Mulan’s face and hair

Refine the face around the oval guide, narrowing the lower part toward the chin. Continue by drawing the hair across the forehead and around the back of the head.

Step 4: Draw Mulan’s facial features

Draw the narrow eyes beneath the hairline and add the eyebrows above them. Place the small nose near the center of the face, then outline the mouth with two short curved lines.

Step 5: Draw the upper part of Mulan’s outfit

Extend two short lines below the head to form the neck. Outline the shoulders and chest, then add the overlapping edges of the garment and the curved neckline across the torso.

Step 6: Outline Mulan’s long sleeves

Use the arm guides to draw two long sleeves extending from the shoulders. Widen the fabric near the lower ends and connect each sleeve to the wrists with short curved lines.

Step 7: Draw Mulan’s hands and sword

Continue by drawing the hands around the sword handle. Add the shaped guard, then draw the sword blade with two long straight lines.

Step 8: Add Mulan’s wide belt

Draw two curved horizontal lines across the waist to form the wide belt. Add the long loose end at one side, letting it hang downward with a slight bend along its length.

Step 9: Draw Mulan’s long dress

From the belt, continue by drawing the dress with long lines that widen toward the hem. Add several broad folds running from the waist to the lower edge.

Step 10: Clean up the Mulan drawing

Erase the head oval, body centerline, arm guides, and joint marks. Redraw any faded contours around the hair, face, sleeves, sword, belt, and dress to leave clean lines.

Step 11: Color the Mulan drawing

Color Mulan’s skin light beige and fill the hair with black. Use blue, cyan, and burgundy for the clothing, then add gray to the blade and yellow to the sword handle.
