How to Draw Buzz Lightyear

With this step-by-step guide you will learn how to draw Buzz Lightyear. This is a popular character and one of the main characters of the Toy Story cartoon. Buzz has fair skin, blue eyes, and a large chin.
In the picture, Buzz is wearing a special suit that has buttons and other controls. Consistently follow all the steps in this instruction and strive to ensure that your drawing is as similar as possible to our example.
Step 1: Sketch the Buzz Lightyear body
Use simple rounded shapes to sketch Buzz Lightyear’s head, chest, abdomen, and pelvis. Draw a vertical guideline through the center of the body to align the main sections of the space ranger.

Step 2: Add the arms and legs
Indicate the positions of the arms and legs with thin straight lines. Place large dots at the shoulders, elbows, knees, and other joints to establish the pose of the animated space ranger.

Step 3: Draw Buzz Lightyear’s face
Refine the outline of the head, including the ears, jaw, and chin. Inside the shape, draw the face by adding the eyes, eyebrows, nose, and smiling mouth.

Step 4: Outline the upper spacesuit
Draw the high collar around Buzz Lightyear’s head, then outline the broad shoulder sections and chest armor. Add the curved seams and panel lines that divide the upper part of the spacesuit.

Step 5: Draw the first armored arm
Follow the first arm guideline and outline the rounded shoulder armor, segmented sleeve, and forearm guard. At the end, draw the hand gripping the handle.

Step 6: Add Buzz Lightyear’s blaster
Draw the blaster held in the raised hand, beginning with its long outer contour. Add the barrel, grip, trigger area, and small mechanical details visible on the futuristic weapon.

Step 7: Detail the chest armor and belt
Continue the spacesuit below the chest by drawing the lower armor plates with smooth curved lines. Add the horizontal belt, central buckle, and separate panels across the abdomen.

Step 8: Outline the second arm and glove
Build the second arm around its guideline, adding the shoulder piece, sleeve sections, and wide forearm guard. Finish the arm by outlining the glove and its slightly bent fingers.

Step 9: Draw the lower spacesuit armor
Outline the armor around the pelvis with several curved and angled lines. Add the central lower panel and the side sections that connect Buzz Lightyear’s belt to the upper legs.

Step 10: Sketch the first armored leg
Use the construction line to outline the leg, narrowing it around the knee. Add the segmented thigh and shin armor, then draw the large space boot at the bottom.

Step 11: Complete the second armored leg
Outline the second leg in the same style, defining the thigh guard, narrow knee section, and lower armor. Finish by drawing the boot beneath the shin.

Step 12: Clean up the Buzz Lightyear drawing
Erase the central guideline, limb construction lines, and joint markers. Restore any contours affected by erasing and clarify the remaining edges of the face, spacesuit, blaster, and boots.

Step 13: Color the Buzz Lightyear drawing
Color the skin light beige and use purple for the head covering. Apply white, gray, and bright green to the spacesuit and blaster, then fill the darkest armor sections with deep gray.

Buzz Lightyear is now fully drawn in his armored space suit with the blaster in hand. A related subject to try next is our guide on how to draw an astronaut.
