How to Draw a Toad

In this very simple instruction, we will show you how to draw a toad – a creature firmly entrenched in the pages of fairy tales.

But besides fairy tales, we could often find the image of a toad in games, films, and comics. For example, one of the strangest characters in the X-Men universe is a supervillain called Toad. One of this villain’s primary abilities is the ability to manipulate his long tongue like a whip.

So, today we will not draw villains and not even fairy-tale characters, but the most classic toad that you can see in almost any swamp.

 

Step 1

To draw a toad and not be mistaken in proportions, you need to start with the simplest geometric shapes. Firstly, draw two ovals, one for the head and one for the body.

Step 2

Now carefully draw the upper part of the mouth, which flows smoothly to the upper part of the head. Next, draw the lower jaw, which merges smoothly into the neck.

Step 3

Now draw a large, rounded eye. Further, draw huge brow ridges above the eyes. Note that these brow ridges give the impression of a frown.

Step 4

Draw the arms with smooth lines, remembering to add folds in the right places. Note that the arm that is far from us is not completely visible due to the toad’s torso.

Step 5

Draw the toad’s fingers with smooth lines. Please note that the position of the palms should be such that the fingers of both hands are facing each other.

Step 6

Now it’s time to draw the hind limbs. Draw the visible leg with smooth lines. The second leg, as you can imagine, is behind the toad’s torso.

Step 7

Draw the toes, which are noticeably longer than the fingers. Now is the time to bring your toad drawing to the mirror to check its proportionality and see all the mistakes.

Step 8

Carefully remove all construction lines, being careful not to touch the important lines of the drawing. You can increase expressiveness to your toad drawing by tracing the lines with a darker pencil, ink, or liner.

Step 9

Toads in nature come in a variety of colors, but the most common are yellow or green. In our example, we have painted our toad in shades of green. We made the eyes darker to make them stand out from the rest of the body.

To make the toad drawing more voluminous, you can add shadows and highlights. Also, you can draw some objects of the environment, for example, various kinds of stones, flowers, or plants. This will not only make your drawing more vivid but also help you practice drawing.
