How to Draw Rainbow Dash

This step-by-step tutorial is dedicated to sketching a popular character. Here we will show you how to draw Rainbow Dash. This is a pony-pagas with a rainbow mane and tail.

Gently draw all the lines that are indicated in red to achieve the best results.

Step 1: Sketch Rainbow Dash’s body base

Draw separate guide shapes for Rainbow Dash’s head, chest, and pelvis. Connect the chest and pelvis with a long curved line to mark the upper contour of the flying pony’s body.

Step 2: Add Rainbow Dash’s limb guides

Extend thin curved lines from the chest and pelvis to mark all four legs. Bend each guide to show the joints and position the limbs in the forward-moving pose shown in the drawing.

Step 3: Outline Rainbow Dash’s head and mane

Trace the muzzle and lower jaw around the head guide, then draw the pointed ear above. Add the upper mane with several curved sections that meet in sharp tips along the crown.

Step 4: Draw Rainbow Dash’s eye

Draw the large eye near the center of Rainbow Dash’s head and add the iris and pupil inside it. Leave two small highlights in the pupil, then outline the upper lashes with short curved strokes.

Step 5: Complete Rainbow Dash’s mane

Start behind the ear and draw the lower section of the mane down the back of the neck. Form several connected locks with curved sides and pointed ends before joining them to the body.

Step 6: Draw Rainbow Dash’s wings

Draw two large wings extending upward from the back. Build each wing from long curved outer lines, then divide the lower edges into separate feather tips that taper toward the ends.

Step 7: Outline Rainbow Dash’s first front leg

Trace both sides of the first front leg around its guide, narrowing the shape near the middle and widening it toward the hoof. Connect the upper leg to the chest with a smooth contour.

Step 8: Draw Rainbow Dash’s second front leg

Outline the second front leg around the remaining guide using two smooth curves. Narrow the limb toward the center, widen the hoof at the end, and connect its upper edge to the chest.

Step 9: Draw Rainbow Dash’s first hind leg

Refine the lower belly with a smooth line, then outline the first hind leg around its guide. Keep the upper section narrow and gradually widen the lower portion as it approaches the hoof.

Step 10: Outline Rainbow Dash’s second hind leg

Draw both sides of the second hind leg of Rainbow Dash around the guide and widen the hoof at the end. Add a long curved line from the pelvis toward the wings to define the pony’s back.

Step 11: Draw Rainbow Dash’s tail

Extend several long curved lines from the back of the body to form the tail. Connect the lines in broad locks that bend in the same direction and finish each section with a pointed tip.

Step 12: Add Rainbow Dash’s cutie mark

Draw a small cloud on the side of the hindquarters of Rainbow Dash using several connected curves. Beneath it, add the lightning-shaped rainbow with three narrow sections bending downward.

Step 13: Detail Rainbow Dash’s mane and tail

Add long curved dividing lines throughout the mane and tail. Follow the direction of each lock so the sections remain distinct and can later be filled with the separate rainbow colors.

Step 14: Clean up the Rainbow Dash drawing

Erase the construction shapes and limb guides without removing the final contours. Redraw any faded sections of the face, wings, legs, mane, and tail to leave a clean line drawing.

Step 15: Color the Rainbow Dash drawing

Fill Rainbow Dash’s body with bright blue and color the eye magenta. Use red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple across the mane, tail, and lightning-shaped cutie mark.
