How to Draw a Horse
This drawing tutorial will show you how to draw a horse easily. Using the thirteen easy steps of this instruction, you can draw a fairly realistic horse.
The horse is a hoofed mammal, and many hoofed mammals are drawn very similarly. For example, the process of drawing a horse is very similar to drawing a deer or a bull.
But of course, in this instruction on how to draw a horse, there will be a lot of features and differences from other similar drawing lessons. We will dwell on these points in particular detail.
How to Draw a Horse
Step 1 – Sketch out the General Outlines
Start drawing the horse by sketching its head, ribcage, and pelvis as ovals. These ovals do not have to have perfectly clear contours.
Step 2 – Sketch out the Limbs and Spine
Use light lines to sketch out the neck, spine, and tail of the horse. Next, move on to the limbs, sketching them in the form of vertical lines.
Step 3 – Draw the Horse Face
Move to the head and sketch out the elongated horse’s face. In the lesson on how to draw a horse head, we described in detail how to do this. Draw the line of the neck.
Step 4 – Draw the Ears
Now go up a little higher and draw the horse’s ears. Recall that in order to test the correctness of your horse drawing, you can look at it in the mirror.
Step 5 – Draw the Eyes
Now portray the eyes carefully. You can give them more realism. To do this, try drawing the folds of the skin around the eyes.
Step 6 – Draw the Nose and Mouth
Now go to the front of the horse’s face and sketch out the nose and mouth. From this point of view, we see only a small portion of the mouth and only one nostril.
Step 7 – Draw the Front Legs
Draw the front legs with smooth long lines. To make the legs of the horse look as realistic as possible, draw the outlines of the muscles and ligaments under the skin.
Step 8 – Draw the Front Hooves and Belly
Draw the two front hooves using three simple short lines. Next, draw the bottom edge of the torso with a long, arched line. Note that the torso should be thinner in the abdomen than the chest.
Step 9 – Draw the Hind Legs
Now carefully draw the hind legs. Note that the hind legs should be noticeably thicker at the top. As in the example with the front legs, do not forget to draw out the outlines of the muscles and ligaments under the skin.
Step 10 – Draw the Hind Hoves
Finish drawing the horse’s hind legs by drawing the hooves. By the way, if you learn how to draw a horse, you can easily draw a pegasus by simply adding wings to it.
Step 11 – Draw the Mane
Now go to the front of the body of our graceful horse to draw its lush mane. You can make it longer than in our example to make your drawn horse look even more epic.
Step 12 – Erase the Guidelines
Erasing any extra lines from your horse drawing will give it a more complete look. To make the artwork even more beautiful, you can darken the necessary lines.
Step 13 – Color Your Horse Drawing
We decided to use brown for the horse’s body, dark brown for the hooves, tail, mane, and nose, and black for the eyes. To give the eyes a little more liveliness, leave white highlights in them.
How can you make a drawn horse more voluminous? Adding shadows, of course. They will add extra volume and separate the animal from the background if you decide to draw it.
