How to Draw a Narwhal
The narwhal is a unique marine mammal often called the “unicorn of the sea” because of its long spiral tusk. In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to draw a narwhal step by step.
The narwhal belongs to the whale family and has an elongated body, small flippers, and a broad tail fluke. Its most distinctive feature is the long tusk that extends from the front of the head.
Scientists are still studying the exact purpose of the narwhal’s tusk, although it is believed to help with sensing the environment and social behavior. By the end of this tutorial, you’ll have a drawing of a narwhal with its characteristic long tusk.

How to Draw a Narwhal
- Draw the base.
Conduct an oval with which you determine the size and location of your drawing. At the initial stage, use thin lines and gradually make the contour more clear.
- Add the front and back of the body.
Depict smooth bent lines along the edges of the oval. In this case, the front part has a smoothed shape, and the back has an elongated end.
- Detail the head.
In the front of the head, draw the long, thin tusk. Using a short line, depict the mouth and draw the eyes in the form of a small circle.
- Depict the side fins.
The body of the body is ready, and it remains to add some small elements. In the bottom of the body, draw two fins. In this case, use smooth curved lines.
- Sketch out the tail.
As already mentioned above, the tail of the narwhal consists of two parts, but in the figure the narwhal is depicted in such a perspective, when the other part of the tail is not visible. Therefore, draw only one part.
- Correct inaccuracies.
Compare the drawing with our example and correct inaccuracies if necessary. Remove all extra lines and make the contour more clear.
- Color the Narwhal.
Color the upper part of the body with a dark gray color. Add the shadows at the bottom of the body and draw the small spots.
