How to Draw a Unicorn
In this drawing lesson, we will show you how to draw a unicorn – one of the most popular mythical creatures.
A unicorn is a horse with a horn on its forehead. And because a unicorn is a horse, the process for drawing a unicorn and a horse is almost identical.
But of course, there are differences between these two animals. For example, the most obvious difference is the unicorn’s horn.
But there are also less obvious differences, and in this lesson on how to draw a unicorn, we will talk about them in great detail.
How to Draw a Unicorn
Step 1 – Sketch out the General Shapes
Start the process of drawing a unicorn by sketching three ovals for the head, ribcage, and pelvis. Try to arrange them in the order in which they appear in the example from the artists of Easydrawingart.com.
Step 2 – Sketch out the Spine and Limbs
Now, with a couple of lines, connect the outlines of the head, chest, and pelvis, forming a kind of unicorn spine. Now sketch out the front and hind limbs using a few straight lines.
Step 3 – Draw the Face and Neck
Now draw the elongated face of the unicorn with smooth lines. Now, using a long and smooth line, draw the lower edge of the neck.
Step 4 – Draw the Horn and Belly
Draw a horn that can be shorter or longer than the one shown in our example. Draw the bottom edge of the torso using a smooth line. The unicorn’s torso should be narrower in the belly than in the chest.
Step 5 – Draw the Face Details
Draw a unicorn eye just below the horn. In the front of the muzzle, draw the nostril and mouth. Add some folds as in our example to make the face look more realistic.
Step 6 – Draw Ears and Patterns on the Horn
To make the unicorn’s horn more beautiful, draw smooth spiral lines on it. Next, draw the ears with a few simple lines.
Step 7 – Draw the Bangs of the Unicorn
Draw the bangs and the top line of the mane. If you are in doubt about the proportionality of your unicorn drawing, you can check it by looking at it through a mirror.
Step 8 – Draw the Mane
Using long, curving lines draw hanging strands of the unicorn’s lush mane. Long and curly hair will give your unicorn drawing a truly epic look.
Step 9 – Draw the Front Legs
Using smooth, long lines sketch out the front legs. To make the legs of the unicorn look natural, draw bulges in the muscles and ligaments under the skin.
Step 10 – Draw the Front Hooves
Draw the front hooves of the unicorn using a few short lines. Further, separate them from the rest of the legs using zigzag hair lines.
Step 11 – Draw the Hind Legs
When drawing the hind legs, keep in mind that they should be noticeably thicker at the top and taper smoothly towards the middle of the leg.
Step 12 – Draw the Hind Hooves
Do the same operation as in the step before last, but this time with the hind hooves. The hind and front hooves are absolutely identical and drawn the same way.
Step 13 – Draw the Upper Line of the Tail
The unicorn’s tail is one of the hallmarks of this mythical character. Start drawing the tail by sketching the top line as shown in our example.
Step 14 – Draw the Lower Line of the Tail
Finish drawing the tail of the unicorn by sketching the bottom line. The tail of your drawn unicorn should be long and curvy, just like in our example.
Step 15 – Erase the Guidelines
Erase all unnecessary construction lines from your unicorn drawing. Use an eraser for this and try not to touch important lines. To erase lines more accurately, you can cut the eraser in half to create sharp edges.
Step 16 – Color Your Unicorn Drawing
We decided to use ivory as the base color, light purple for the tail and mane, dark ivory for the hooves, light pink for the horn, and black for the eye. Don’t forget to paint shadows and leave a highlight in the eye to make your unicorn drawing was more alive.
To make the process of drawing a unicorn even more interesting, you can try adding some additional elements.
