How to Draw a Seahorse
The seahorse is a very unusual creature, and many aspiring artists do not know how to draw a seahorse correctly. In this instruction, we will show you in detail how to draw a seahorse quickly and easily.
According to various sources, this genus of fish includes about 50 species, each of which has its own characteristics and distinctive features. In this instruction, we decided to depict the most classic and standard look with the most recognizable features.
Step 1
Let’s start drawing the seahorse by portraying the head as a ball and the torso as an oval. There should be a distance for the neck between the head and torso.
Step 2
Draw the characteristic line of the back, merging into a curving tail. As you can see, it is because of this bend that this fish is called the sea horse.
Step 3
Draw one short C-shaped line for the front of the neck. Next, draw the front surface of the tail with a long, smooth line.
Step 4
Now it’s time to draw the eye. Firstly, create a circle for the eye. Then draw a round pupil exactly in the center. By the way, to check the proportionality of the sketch, try looking at it through a mirror.
Step 5
Draw a long snout with a couple of long lines. Next, depict the uneven top and bottom of the head as shown in our example.
Step 6
The seahorse has patterns all over its body, and in this stage, we will start drawing them. Firstly, draw long longitudinal lines that run through the entire body of the fish.
Step 7
Now use short lines to draw a large number of transverse lines. When creating these lines, take into account the curves of the body of the seahorse so as not to lose the volume of the drawing.
Step 8
Draw a small fin on the back where the torso meets the tail. Remember to create the fin texture with a series of short lines. The edge of the fin should be uneven and slightly serrated.
Step 9
Carefully remove all construction lines from your seahorse drawing. Further, you can outline your artwork with a darker pencil or some kind of liner.
Step 10
You can of course leave your seahorse drawing as in the previous stage, but to give it more liveliness, it is better to color it. We’ve colored our seahorse drawing red, but you can of course choose any other color, for example, green or yellow.
So, what to do next if you’ve already drawn a seahorse and it looks amazing. We advise you not to stop there. First of all, try to portray this unusual animal in its natural environment. That is, draw algae, stones, and other fish around it. Then you can practice drawing the seahorse by portraying it a few more times but in different poses and different angles.
