How to Draw a Toucan

In this drawing instruction, we will show you how to draw a toucan – a bird with a very interesting and recognizable appearance.

Like all exotic birds, toucans have a very interesting and varied coloring. After going through all the stages of the instruction on how to draw a toucan, you can paint it in some interesting colors that differ from those presented in our instruction.

 

Step 1

Start drawing the toucan by depicting the head as a ball and the torso as an oval. The ball of the head should intersect slightly with the oval of the torso.

Step 2

Now draw a long beak with a couple of very long arched lines. Note that the beak is approximately the same size as the torso.

Step 3

Now separate the head from the beak with a couple of short lines. Further, using another long and arched line, draw the split of the beak in the lower third of the beak.

Step 4

Connect the head and neck with a pair of short, flowing lines. After that, at the top of the head, draw the eye in the form of a circle. The eye should be as round as possible.

Step 5

Now go to the bottom of the torso by drawing the tail feathers and the top of the leg. To check the proportionality of the toucan drawing, look at it through a mirror.

Step 6

Now draw long fingers and sharp claws. There is another way to check the proportionality of the picture: you can turn it upside down.

Step 7

Further, use a long and smooth line to draw a wing that is almost the size of the torso. In the same stage, depict long wing feathers.

Step 8

Using an eraser, remove all unnecessary construction lines from your toucan drawing. You can leave the lines as they are, or darken the necessary details of the bird.

Step 9

We painted the toucan using yellow, gray, blue, red, and black colors. Let us remind you that this bird is very unusual precisely for its colors, so you can paint your bird drawing in completely different colors.

In addition to the colors, we also added shadows to the body and highlights to the eyes. This helped to give the toucan drawing more volume and make it more convincing.
