How to Draw a Windmill

With our clear and accessible instructions, you’ll learn how to draw a windmill step by step. It’s a great subject to draw, and this tutorial will provide excellent practice.
A windmill has a basic structure and four blades located at the top. The millstones are driven by the wind. You can use any tools you have on hand or draw all the lines yourself for this tutorial.
Step 1: Sketch the basic windmill structure
Lightly sketch the outline of the windmill tower. Add two intersecting guidelines near the top to mark the position and direction of the four windmill blades.

Step 2: Outline the windmill blades
Refine the outlines of the four blades using the construction lines as guides. Draw a small circle at the center where all of the windmill blades connect.

Step 3: Draw the lower windmill blades
Add the two lower rectangular blades. Draw long inner supports and several crossbars inside each blade to create the classic wooden windmill design.

Step 4: Complete the upper windmill blades
Repeat the same process for the two upper blades. Match their width and inner crossbars so all four blades share the same simple windmill design.

Step 5: Draw the windmill tower
Trace the tower using the construction lines and define its final shape. Finish this step by adding the pointed roof on top of the windmill building.

Step 6: Draw the windmill windows and door
Add two small windows near the top of the tower and draw the rectangular front door at the bottom to complete the main details.

Step 7: Add the ground details
Draw a long curved line around the bottom of the tower to create the grassy ground and finish the simple landscape surrounding the windmill.

Step 8: Clean up the windmill drawing
Erase all remaining construction lines and refine the outline of the windmill. Remove any rough sketch marks so the drawing is clean and ready for coloring.

Step 9: Color the windmill drawing
Color the wooden tower and blades with different shades of brown. Fill the grass with green, and use light blue for the windows to complete the classic windmill illustration.
