In this drawing tutorial, we will show you how to draw a raven – one of the most famous birds with an extremely interesting appearance. This bird has ritual significance in some religions of some peoples. For example, among the Slavs, the raven was always considered the Devil’s bird, and in ancient Scandinavia, this bird was the guide of the main German god Wotan-Odin.
Many of us associate the crow with dark forces, prejudices, but we know how to stop seeing negative sides in this bird. To do this, we will start this tutorial on how to draw a raven right now to create a positive image of this bird!
How to Draw a Raven
Step 1 – Sketch the Head and Torso
First, draw an elongated oval and place it at an angle. Mark the position of the head a little higher – a small circle will perform this function.
Step 2 – Draw the Tail and Neck
Draw a triangular shape on the left side of the largest oval to form the tail. Then unite the head and body with two jagged lines – the distance between them will make the crow’s neck thicker or narrower.
Step 3 – Draw the Beak
The beak of the raven is visually divided into two parts. Draw the rounded beak and divide it with a longitudinal line. This will show the mouth of the crow.
Step 4 – Draw the Eye
Draw a small circle at the center of the head. Then, draw a line from the top of the beak to the eye and complete the line down to the base of the beak.
Step 5 – Draw the Wing of the Raven
From our perspective, you can see only one wing – it covers most of the body. Then, round the tip of the wing, make sure it is shorter than the tail.
Step 6 – Draw the Legs of the Raven
Give the raven strong legs. Draw the denser thighs. Mark the bend where the knees should be. After that, draw the thin lower part of the legs.
Step 7 – Draw the Toes of the Raven
Place one finger in front of the other two. It should be shorter. Sharpen each finger in a wedge-shaped form – these are the claws of the raven.
Step 8 – Draw Plumage of the Raven
From the top to the tail and cover the entire wing and tail area with strokes. Give them the geometric shape of feathers.
Step 9 – Erase the Guidelines
So, check if the feathers look neat and do not go beyond the lines of the body. If everything is in order with this, go to the final stage – remove all guidelines from your raven drawing.
Step 10 – Color the Raven Drawing
Make the color of our crow solid. Mix gray and black in the palette to create a dark color as in our example. After that, add volume with shadows, and make the beak and paws black.
