How to Draw a Komodo Dragon
Here, you will learn how to draw a Komodo dragon. It is the world’s largest lizard, with an elongated, low-slung body covered in small scales, strong legs, and a long tail.
Komodo dragons have lived on Earth for millions of years, but today they are an endangered species. They are also considered dangerous predators because of their venomous bite.
With its long, powerful tail, a Komodo dragon can knock down large animals such as deer or buffalo. By the end of this tutorial, you’ll have a drawing of a Komodo dragon in a natural standing pose.

How to Draw a Komodo Dragon
- Prepare the base.
Sequentially draw three circles of different sizes, with the help of which you will determine the location of the main parts of the body of the Komodo dragon.
- Depict the back and limbs.
Draw a long line along the top edge. The line should connect all the circles and smoothly pass into the tail. Determine the position of the front and hind legs.
- Add the lower part of the torso.
Draw a smooth line along the bottom edge, just like you did in the previous step. In this way you will draw the outline of the neck, belly and lower part of the tail.
- Sketch out the front of the head.
Draw the front of the head on the left side of the drawing. Add the outline of the forehead, nose and lower jaw. Depict the mouth with a smooth line.
- Detail the head and torso.
Depict the small eye, nostrils and with a short rounded line draw the ear hole. Draw thin jagged lines on the dragon’s body to represent the folds.
- Draw the front paw.
Add the volume to the front paw. Draw a few smooth rounded lines, use the auxiliary lines that you prepared in advance as a guide.
- Depict the bottom of the paws.
Add the foot and long, curved toes that have a spiky outline. Also depict the lower part of the paw, which is located farther from us.
- Sketch out the hind paw.
Using a few smooth lines, draw a half-bent hind leg. With short strokes, draw the folds on the skin.
- Add the bottom of the hind leg.
The feet on the hind legs have a different shape than on the front. The foot is wide, and the toes are short, but just as sharp.
- Correct inaccuracies.
All elements of the body are already drawn and at this stage you can remove the auxiliary lines, correct errors and make the outline clearer.
- Color the Komodo dragon.
Use a dark gray to color the body of the Komodo Dragon. Do not forget to add shadows where it is necessary.
